Why Valve Thread Standards Are the #1 Cause of CO2 Cylinder Returns
When a B2B buyer receives a shipment of CO2 cylinders and discovers the valve thread doesn’t fit their regulator, the cylinders are often unsellable. They can’t be refilled locally, they don’t connect to customer filling equipment, and shipping them back is more expensive than writing them off.
This scenario plays out hundreds of times every year in the global CO2 cylinder trade. The good news: it is 100% preventable with one piece of information upfront – the destination market’s valve thread standard.
This guide covers the four thread standards that cover 95% of global CO2 cylinder trade, and gives you the exact specification to send to your manufacturer.
The Four Main Thread Standards
1. CGA (Compressed Gas Association) – North America
CGA-320 is the standard for carbon dioxide cylinders in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Key specifications:
- Thread type: 0.825″-14 NGO (National Gas Outlet) right-hand thread
- Pressure rating: Up to 1800 psi working pressure
- Common applications: Beverage carbonation, paintball, industrial CO2
- Visual identifier: CGA stamp on valve body, brass or nickel-plated finish
The US beverage industry standardized on CGA-320 in the 1970s, and it has remained dominant. If you are supplying North American customers, this is almost certainly the thread you need.
2. BS 341 (British Standard) – United Kingdom, Middle East, parts of Asia
BS 341 Part 1 covers non-medical gas cylinder valves. The relevant size for CO2 is:
- Thread type: 0.860″-14 NGO right-hand thread (Bullnose)
- Common designation: Size 3 (sometimes referred to as BS-3)
- Regional adoption: UK, Ireland, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia
Don’t confuse BS 341 with the European DIN standard – the threads are dimensionally similar but not interchangeable. Forcing a BS valve onto a DIN regulator will cross-thread and potentially cause a leak.
3. DIN 477 – Continental Europe
DIN 477 is the European continental standard for gas cylinder valves:
- Thread type: W21.8 x 14 threads/inch right-hand
- Common designation: Number 6 (NO.6) for CO2
- Regional adoption: Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Scandinavia, Eastern Europe
- Variants: NO.6 for CO2, NO.1 for oxygen, NO.3 for nitrogen
Within the EU, DIN 477 is the de facto standard. However, several countries (notably Greece, Portugal, and parts of the former Yugoslavia) have legacy Soviet GOST standards – always verify with the local gas association before finalizing.
4. JIS B 8246 – Japan and Korea
JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) covers Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan:
- Thread type: W22-14 right-hand (different from DIN W21.8)
- Pressure rating: Standard and high-pressure variants
- Common applications: Industrial CO2, aquarium CO2 systems
The 22mm vs 21.8mm thread difference is small enough that they look identical but won’t seal properly. Japan-specific orders should always specify “JIS B 8246 compliant” in writing.
Thread Standard Compatibility Matrix
| Cylinder Valve | Will fit | Will NOT fit |
|---|---|---|
| CGA-320 | US/CAN regulators | EU DIN regulators, UK BS regulators |
| BS 341 Size 3 | UK, UAE, Singapore regulators | US CGA, EU DIN |
| DIN 477 NO.6 | EU continental regulators | US, UK, Japan regulators |
| JIS B 8246 | Japan, Korea regulators | All Western markets without adapter |
The Adapter Question
Adapters exist for almost every thread pair combination. For refill, this is rarely acceptable because:
- Industrial filling stations typically don’t allow customer-owned adapters
- Adapters introduce a secondary leak point
- Insurance and liability coverage may exclude adapter-based systems
- Adapter-based connections are often flagged during safety audits
The correct approach is to source cylinders with the correct native valve thread for your destination market, not to standardize globally and rely on adapters.
How VS Cylinder Handles Multi-Standard Orders
VS Cylinder produces all four major thread standards in-house, with dedicated CNC production lines for each:
- Specify your destination market on the RFQ – we’ll suggest the right valve
- Sample valves available for B2B clients who need to validate before bulk order
- Per-cylinder valve stamp for traceable compliance documentation
- Mixed container loading – we can ship different valve standards in a single 20ft container if needed for distribution hubs
Field-Tested Thread Identification
If you receive cylinders without documentation and need to identify the thread, this is the field test VS Cylinder technicians use:
- Physical measurement: Caliper the outer thread diameter (0.825″, 0.860″, 21.8mm, 22mm)
- Thread pitch: TPI (threads per inch) is 14 for all four major standards
- Valve stamp: Look for CGA, BS, DIN, or JIS markings on the valve body
- Color coding: CO2 valves are commonly unpainted brass, but black or yellow paint is also used – never rely on color alone
